Description

India's traditional kitchen is a combination of spices, herbs, vegetables and fruits. The Ammikallu, also known as ammikal, arakallu, ammi kal, or sil batta, was the grinding tool of choice in south India before the food processor era began. The ingredients are placed on the surface of the flat stone and a cylindrical stone is rolled back and forth to grind the ingredients to obtain a thick paste, unlike with a mortar and pestle where the ingredients are more pounded. The fresh masala (blend of spices) prepared on ammikallu has a unique, earthy flavor that is unbeatable! Low tech beauty

Other reviewers capture the essence of this beautiful, functional stone. Here are some deets that help. Although the top of the stone is 14x8, the part that sits on the counter is 11 7/8x 6 3/4, in case you wish to prepare counter protection. I am currently using the stone on a silicone roasting mat about 1/2 inch tall but will change that to something nicer looking. The pebbled working surface is 9 1/2x 6 1/4.

Regarding height and ergonomics of grinding, the stone is 2 1/2 inches tall. Since I have it lifted 1/2 inch on a mat atop a 36 inch counter, this is about right for my height 5’8”. When I am using the cylinder to grind, my elbows move forward and backward 3-4 inches above the top of the stone.

Grab it before it goes extinct

Traditional Ammikallu will be extinct soon. It’s very good quality, even if not using, it can be a decor.

A good sized ammikallu. Perfect in the kitchen and as a decor as well.
